Annual festival of Thondaimanaru Selva Sannithi temple commences today

The annual festival of historic Thondaimanaru Selva Sanity temple, in Jaffna, has commenced today with Kodiyetram – the traditional ceremony of hoisting of flag at the uppermost portion of the temple, to mark the beginning of the annual festival.
At 04:00 a.m. on today, the temple priest had hoisted the Temple flag (kodiyetram in Tamil) to mark the commencement of 15-day festival amidst chanting of hymns. The festival would be held for 15 days, where the Chariot festival would be on the 20th of Aug and Theeratham (Holy bath) would be on the 21st of Aug.
Thondaimanaru Selva Sannithi Temple is said to be one of the very few temples in Srilanka that does not practice rites and observances according to Saiva agama traditions.
Maunathiruvizha (Sillance festival) is a very important ritual which is not seen in any other temples in the Island, which is observed in the evening of the last day.
Thondaimanaru Selva Sannithi temple is located at about 4 Km west of Valvettithurai and it falls under Valvettithurai urban council.
