A Merchant Shipping's sub secretariat office under the Ministry of Ports and Shipping - first of its kind in North - was opened on Friday in Kites, Jaffna by the Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga, in order to commence a safe passenger boat transportation service between the islands and main land Jaffna.
It is said that Coastal passenger transportation service will involve only five islands in Jaffna. They are Nagadeepa, Delft, Analathiv, Eluvathiv and Kareithiv.
"At most instances the passenger transportation is unprotected. The charges are not made in a proper manner. Few vessels are dilapidated. An insurance policy is not used. No proper timetable is used. The plan of the ministry is to identify such issues and find a permanent solution to it," The minister stated while addressing the event in Kites.
