Annual “Thaipongal” air kite competition organized by “Vikneswara community Centre’ has proved again with success at Valvettithurai, Jaffna on 14th Jan 2017, witnessing participation of about 25,000 of people from various parts of Jaffna Peninsula.
The event headed by Mr.B.Siva Anpu (President of the community Centre) commenced at about 1430 hours, where Mr.Dineswaran (Minister of Fisheries, Transport, Trade and Commerce, Rural Development, Road Development and Motor Traffic, Northern provincial council) participated as Chief guest and Mr.M.K.Sivajilingam (Member of Northern provincial council) special guest and Mr.Pirasanth (Secretary of Valvettithurai Urban Council), and Mr.Jeyaselan (Secretary, Point Pedro divisional secretariat) participated as guests of honor.
In addition to Kite competition, the event continued with a musical show of Super singers of Tamilnadu.
Over 50 kites of all shapes, colors, sizes with dimensions were setting the sky over the Uthayasuriyan beach - one of the prominent beache along the Point Pedro – KKS road, which was renovated and declared open ny NPC Chief Minister Mr.C.V.Vikneswaran
Moderate wind resulted from prevailed north east monsoon favored most of the kites to fly sucessfully.
A 40 feet Lizard had attracted the audiance and secured the first place in the competition. The kite was designed by Mr.Mahenthiran, who has won the first prize in the last year competition as well.
The kite competition has grown over the past few 6 years because of the support of participants and increasing number of spectators not only from local but also from all over the Peninsula.
